/ Byodo-In Temple: The Place For Meditation In Honolulu
Byodo-In Temple lies at the base of the Ko’olau Mountains in Valley of the Temples Memorial Park in Honolulu, Hawaii. This nondenominational Buddhist temple was built in 1968 to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. The Temple is a beautiful replica of the 950 year-old Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan. It is one of the most tranquil and peaceful spots on the island of Oahu.
This incredible structure was built without any nails, and the grounds themselves are a lush paradise filled with koi carp and wild peacocks. The large reflecting pond provides stunning views which took my breath away. The essence of being alive seems to run through everything at this beautiful sanctuary.
On the way to the temple, don’t pass up the opportunity to ring the Bon-sho or sacred bell.
The tone of the bell will make you feel calm and peaceful and was one of my favorite things about being on the temple grounds.
Ringing this 3-ton brass bell just once before entering the temple is said to cleanse the mind of evil spirits and temptation before meditation.
You will feel the vibration running through your entire body every time you strike the bell.
Up the hill behind the temple, you will find the meditation pavilion. This is a wonderful spot that reminded me that all I needed to do to be fully present is breathe. When I am present, I can be more fully mindful of all that I am.
Take a walk around the grounds and enjoy backdrop of the misty mountains, the small waterfalls, tropical flowers, and black swans.
The koi are some of the biggest you will every see because many of them are over 100 years old!
Inside the Byodo-In Temple is Amida, a golden Buddha unique to the entire world. This 9 foot Buddha is thought to be the largest figure carved outside of Japan. Make sure to remove your shoes before entering the temple.
While this site isn’t a touristy spot, I had to laugh as there was even WiFi access at this tranquil spot. And, perhaps a way of representing the Laughing Buddha?
The Byodo-In Temple Grounds are open 9:00am – 5:00pm daily. Admission for the temple is $5 for adults and $2 for children, and it’s cash only. I also recommend bringing bug spray, as there are a lot of mosquitoes in the area.
If you are looking for a calming oasis right in the middle of Oahu, Byodo-In Temple is the place to go to become more centered and balanced, and to leave your worries behind.
Wow, what a gorgeous place. I would love to go there. Looks incredibly relaxing.
