/ Exploring Florida Springs: Nature’s Liquid Jewels
My absolute favorite thing about living in Florida so far has been exploring the Florida Springs. They are absolutely breathtaking. The deep colors and the clear waters make for an otherworldly experience, and I have seen so much wildlife on these excursions. I’ve seen manatees, alligators, more turtles than I can count, roseate spoonbills, and so many other birds. Florida has over 1,000 springs, so I still have many more to explore, but these have been my favorite Florida Springs so far.
Exploring Florida Springs
1. Three Sisters Springs
Three Sisters Springs is part of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, and is the place to go in winter if you want to see manatees. The actual spring will be blocked to kayakers because there will be so many manatees (kayaks are allowed inside from April 1 to November 14), but you can still paddle in the river outside of the spring entrance to see them. I also recommend taking the shuttle and walking the boardwalk to get the best view of the manatees. You can then drive to the area you can paddle from to get a different view. The water is 71 degrees all year, so the manatees flock here in the winter to stay warm. The water is crystal clear, and this is the most magical experience.
2. The Rainbow River
The Rainbow River, in Dunnellon, Florida is a wonderful Florida experience that you have to do. You can either kayak or float in an inner tube down the river and forget every care you have. I did the tubing experience, and it was great. There is a shuttle that will take you back to your car when you’re done. I went on a Friday and loved the tranquil atmosphere. It’s a lot less crowded here than on the Crystal River. My advice is to start early, as Florida is known for its afternoon thunderstorms, and you don’t want to be stuck on the river during a storm.
3. Silver Springs River
Silver River is where I definitely saw the most wildlife. Even a few alligators! But, none of the famous monkeys, which I’d love to see. I loved kayaking there, but there are glass bottom boat tours that you can also take. The water is clear with beautiful scenery all around. There are also quite a few trails you can hike if you’re a hiker. This is a definite slice of the real Florida, and I highly recommend.
4. Weekie Wachee Springs
Weekie Wachee Springs has absolutely glorious kayaking, and is the closest of the Florida springs to St Pete where I happen to live. The water is gorgeous and there are stunning views as you paddle. The current is swift, so make sure you know how to turn corners in a kayak, as this spring run does have some twists and turns. This is a very relaxing place to paddle, and I love that they don’t allow anyone to bring in single use plastic. You can also enter the State Park and see the mermaid show, but I’ve never done this part of Weekie Wachee. There’s also a water park for the kids.
5. Ginnie Springs
I had heard that Ginnie Springs, could be quite the party scene, but I went on a Thursday, and found it to be quite serene. Located in High Springs, FL, it’s made up of seven springs, and is pricier than the other springs. Though if you want to avoid the admission fee, launch from Gilchrist Blue springs nearby and paddle here. In fact, I recommend this, as if you launch from Ginnie, you have to shove your kayak down some stairs (and bring it back up later) as it’s not an actual kayak launch. You can also inner tube and even dive here! The springs are beautiful, and while I’d avoid summer weekends, they are very peaceful during the week. I loved playing with the otters and the beautiful blue water of the springs.
6. Ichetucknee Springs
And I’ve saved the best of the Florida Springs for last. My absolute favorite of all the springs is Ichetucknee Springs. It’s a wondrous site to behold. I got there right when they opened, and was treated to a marvel of spider webs like I’ve never seen before. It was pure peace as I glided along the water watching beautiful sites unfold before my eyes. I saw roseate spoonbills, turtles, and many other birds in the quiet of the foggy morning. Many people say this is the most pristine spring run in the state, and I believe it.
