/ Pokai Bay: A Sacred Beach On Oahu
Pokai Bay, in Waianae, is the very essence of a Hawaiian Beach.
A calm bay, swaying palm trees, people playing their drums on the beach.
Just to the left of the bay is the Ku’ilioloa Heiau which is dedicated to a legendary dog kupua (spirit) who protected travelers.
How wonderful that I saw a dog there when I visited.
I also saw quite a few playful spirits in the trees here!
And the stones
If you visit, take a few moments to just be present here and experience the sacred energy that is all around
Rituals performed at the heiau protected those traveling by land and sea.
Let us not forget the living presence in all things and honor the sacredness and joy of life.
At the Pokai Bay section of the beach, you will see lots of local families celebrating life and each other with cookouts, singing, lots of smiles, and aloha. This is the most protected beach on the leeward side of Oahu.
The bay is perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing, and snorkeling. Because of the calm water, it’s also a great place to bring children. Dolphins and turtles also frequent the area. Pack enough supplies for the entire day, as it’s also a stunning place to watch the sunset.
Enjoy the beauty of the surrounding mountains, the vibrant greens and blues, and this special place with connects people at a heart level. I felt it, and I’m sure you will, too.
If you don’t bring your own picnic to the beach park, I highly recommend dining at Coquito’s Latin Restaurant after your beach trip. I had a garlic shrimp mofongo made with mashed plantain and bacon, fried yucca (to die for!), gandules rice, and tembleque which was a coconut custard topped with cinnamon.
