/ From City to Serenity: How to Plan a Perfect Trip to Panama
If you’re the kind of traveler who loves relaxing but also craves the city vibe, Panama offers the best of both worlds.
This Central American gem will have you sitting on a beach one minute and sipping a rooftop cocktail the next. It’s a destination that makes it easy to enjoy it all.
Starting in the Heart: Exploring Panama City
Panama City is a great place to start your trip, with Casco Viejo being one of the highlights.
Also known as Casco Viejo or San Felipe, this historic old quarter is where you can wander through plazas, take in the colonial architecture, and sip on a strong café con leche in one of the many cafes. No trip is complete without cruising through the Panama Canal, either.
After sightseeing, head upstairs! There are plenty of rooftop bars to choose from, and Lazotea Restaurant & Rooftop and Tantalo Hotel Rooftop Bar should be at the top of your list.
Escaping to the Islands
The San Blas Islands offer one of the most authentic island escapes in Panama. Just off the country’s coast, it is managed by the indigenous Guna Yala people and you can book into a simple cabana (perfect for a few days of digital detox).
If you prefer a more lively vibe, Bocas del Toro is where it’s at. Think colorful wooden houses, beach bars, surfing, and snorkeling. It’s everything you could hope for in a Caribbean vacation.
Whichever option you go for, be sure to book your transport and accommodation well in advance, as ferries and small domestic flights fill up quickly during peak season.
Rainforests and Highland Highlights
Panama is incredibly diverse in terms of the landscape, so, once you’re done with the beach, it’s time to venture out to try something a little wilder.
The rainforests located just outside Gamboa are where you will find several inviting eco lodges, canal–side boat rides, and some excellent wildlife encounters.
You could also opt for some cooler mountain air and head to Boquete in the highlands, which is a hub for coffee farm tours, hiking trails, and hot springs like Caldera. The Volcán Barú sunrise hike is a must if you’re a sucker for adventure!
Tips for Planning Your Panama Trip
The dry season, from December to April, is one of the best times to visit Panama, especially if you want to do all the touristy things while enjoying time outdoors.
In terms of timing, consider spending two to three days in Panama City, followed by another two or three days in San Blas or Bocas del Toro for your island escape. Add another couple of days if you want to make your way to Boquete or Gamboa.
In terms of getting around, domestic flights, buses, and private transfers aren’t hard to come by. And even though Spanish is the primary language, you will find that most people can speak English, which makes it easier to make bookings, negotiate prices, and find exactly what you need.
And, no matter what floats your boat, remember to pack wisely!
Panama Has It All
Panama is one of those rare destinations where you don’t have to choose between relaxing, adventure, or sightseeing. The fact that you can enjoy a more serene retreat but still have some fun in the city is just one of the reasons why this is one of the most popular vacation destinations. It’s a must-see!
