Best Holiday Spots for Single Travelers Looking to Meet New People

A TravelBoom study put solo trips at 59% of US leisure travelers in 2026, up from 46% the year before. That kind of move changes how a destination gets judged. Some places supply company before a traveler does anything to arrange it, and others leave a person eating dinner alone for eight nights.

Lisbon at the Hostel Dinner Table

Lisbon is built for people who arrive alone, and the evidence is in how its hostels run their evenings. Home Lisbon Hostel and Yes! Lisbon Hostel run family-style dinners every night, which puts 20 or 30 strangers at one table with an assigned seat and no polite way to opt out. The city holds language exchanges four nights a week in bars across the center, and free walking tours leave from the main squares most mornings.

A traveler with no plan still ends up in three or four conversations a day. English fluency among younger Portuguese is high, and a week in Lisbon costs well below the equivalent week in Paris or Amsterdam. For a first trip taken alone, those two facts do more for the week than the sightseeing does.

Chiang Mai for Longer Stays

Chiang Mai works best on a long stay. The city runs on coworking spaces, cooking classes and temple day trips, all of which put a traveler in front of the same group on a Tuesday and again on a Friday. That kind of repeat contact is what turns an introduction into a friendship, and a short trip rarely allows for it. Accommodation costs stay low enough that a month there costs less than a week in most European capitals, which is why the international community renews itself constantly without ever emptying out.

Northern Thailand has a burn season from roughly February to April when air quality drops sharply. Book around it.

The other advantage is cost per social hour. A cooking class costs a few dollars, a Muay Thai gym charges by the session, and both put a person in a fixed group for several hours at a stretch. Cities where the same activities cost 10 times as much force a traveler to ration them, and rationed activities produce fewer introductions.

Buenos Aires and the Milonga Circuit

Buenos Aires keeps later hours than Lisbon and has a smaller foreign community. The milongas, the city’s tango social dances, take beginners without ceremony. An invitation is made by eye contact and a nod across the room, so nobody has to walk over and start a conversation cold. Someone who cannot dance is expected to sit at the edge and watch for the first hour, then accept when the nod comes.

The etiquette also settles what a dance means, which is very little. A milonga floor holds long-married couples, people between relationships, tourists on their third lesson and anybody looking for a sugar daddy or some other relationship that does not follow the usual template, and the room treats all of them identically. Nobody asks. The dance is three songs long and then everyone moves on.

Seven Days on a Boat

Croatia’s advantage is the boat. Sailing weeks along the Dalmatian coast put ten or so people on one vessel for seven days, with no way to leave between islands. Split itself is compact, and the streets inside Diocletian’s Palace are small enough that the same bar fills with the same group within about 48 hours. Cyclists ride the coast road toward Dubrovnik in stages, and the guesthouses along that route are used to single bookings.

Season matters here more than anywhere else on this list. July and August fill the islands with families. Prices double and the sailing berths sell out by March.

Group Tours and the Single Supplement

Small-group tours built for people traveling alone grew from 22% to 31% of the solo female travel market in 2026, and pricing has moved with the demand. Rick Steves now charges a flat $50 per day instead of the variable rate it once applied. Collette ran a campaign from March to July 2026 that took up to $1,000 off its Explorations tours for solo bookings, aimed at travelers over 50. Pangolin Photo Safaris dropped the supplement at its Chobe hotel in Botswana entirely, with the waiver holding through 2028.

Safari and expedition travel used to be the worst offender on this front, where the single supplement has historically added anywhere from 25% to 100% to the price. A charge of that size on a two week trip decides for many people between going and staying home.

Group size is the number to check before price. A tour capped at 16 people produces a functioning group by day two, while a coach with 45 seats splits into cliques that formed at the airport. Operators publish the cap, and it is usually buried in the fine print under trip style.

The Problem of Eating Alone

Dinner is where solo trips fail. Lunch is easy because it is short and often taken standing up, and mornings fill themselves with whatever the day’s plan is. Evenings are three hours long and structurally empty unless something has been booked into them.

Two fixes work reliably. Food tours start at dinner hour, seat 8 to 12 strangers together and end at a bar, which converts the worst part of the day into the most social one. Failing that, eat at counters. Ramen bars, tapas counters, oyster bars and market stalls all seat people side by side facing the kitchen, and the person on the next stool is closer than they would be across a table for two.

The Age Profile of Solo Travel

Around 39% of solo travelers are 40 or older, split fairly evenly between the forties and the fifties. Among solo female travelers over 40, 37% have taken more than ten trips alone, which makes them the most practiced segment of the market.

That has consequences for where to book. A hostel dorm in Lisbon and a small-group walking tour through Andalusia both solve the same problem, and the second one solves it for people who want a private bathroom at the end of the night. The cruise industry moved first here, building ships with dedicated single cabins and cutting supplements on selected sailings. Norwegian alone has 128 studio cabins on one ship. Land operators followed, and the departure calendars for 40-plus trips now fill earlier than the general ones.

Booking the First Week

Choose a destination by the shape of its evenings. The monuments are the same regardless of who books the ticket, but the difference between a city where dinner happens at a shared table and one where it happens at a table for one shows up by the second night.

Book a hostel, a sailing week or a small-group tour for the first three nights of any trip taken alone, even when the rest of the trip is booked into hotels. Those first 72 hours set the pattern for everything after them. A private room on night one usually means a private room on night seven.
